General Information
AIATSIS is a national funding body for research in Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies. The Research Grants Program supports research into areas such as:
-
archaeology
-
the arts
-
education and cultural transmission
-
health (social, cultural and environmental aspects) and biological sciences
-
history (including family and community history)
-
linguistics
-
politics, law, and public policy
- social anthropology
Within these categories, AIATSIS places special emphasis on applications dealing with
- relations with Government
- knowledge about and caring for Country
- economic sustainability
AIATSIS does not fund: publication or production costs; returning materials to communities or repatriation of material; or research for Native Title claims.
Grants are sometimes provided to record family or community histories, but applications will need to show how the story is important to the history of the region. This is because many people have important and interesting stories, but we don't have enough money to pay for all of them.
Applying for a grant
The Information for AIATSIS Research Grant Applicants document contains the most important information you will need to complete an application for a grant. It explains the sort of information we will be looking for in your application and how it will be assessed.
Applications must be made on the Research Grant Application Form. To assist in developing your project budget, a budget calculator spreadsheet is available. You may wish to use the checklist to ensure you have provided all materials.
Individuals and/or organisations may apply for research grants. However, all applicants are normally required to have an Australian based administering organisation; this could be a university, statutory body or an incorporated organisation.
Each application will need two references, using the Referee Report Form 2009. The document Information for Referees provides additional material for referees.
Most grants will require ethical clearance from individuals for community groups. A draft Informed Consent form should be sent with your application. You can use your institution's forms, develop your own version or adapt the attached pro-forma consent form and Template for a Plain English Research Statement.
Successful applicants will need to comply with the Guidelines for Ethical Research in Indigenous Studies.
If you are unable to download or print any of the documents, please contact us.
Applicants are responsible for ensuring that the application form, references, community supports letters and other documents are delivered to AIATSIS by the closing date, 12 January 2009. Documents received after that date will not be circulated to the assessors.
