When do I need to obtain Ethical Clearance approval for my research?
Projects regarding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples require an ethical clearance to assure their rights, culture and heritage are respected. And to guarantee that they participate in any research project that concerns them, sharing an understanding of the aims and methods of the research, and sharing the results of this work.
Regardless of the sample size or research methodology (surveys, participant observation, etc.) of the project, as long as it refers to Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples and their cultures the project requires of ethical clearance approval.

Who will be revising my Ethical Clearance Application?
The AIATSIS Research Ethics Committee (REC) is responsible for the revision of all ethical clearance applications and their approval/approval subject to conditions/disapproval.

How long does the ethics clearance reviewing process take?
AIATSIS Research Ethics Committee holds four meetings per year. The ethical clearance proposals are reviewed during these meetings. The result notifications will be provided 10 working days after the meeting.

How will I be notified of the Research Ethics Committee’s decision?
After the Research Ethics Committee has reached a decision, a notification will be posted to the applicant informing of the result.
