This workshop will discuss recent and emerging ethical issues affecting research with Indigenous people. The starting point for discussion will be an issues paper to be released in late September.
AIATSIS is undertaking a full review of its Guidelines for Ethical Research in Indigenous Studies (GERIS) and associated materials. The Guidelines were drafted around ten years ago, and have not been comprehensively reviewed since.
The project will examine developments in ethical practices over the past decade and emerging trends for the future, with the aim of delivering a coherent policy document to guide ethical research involving Indigenous peoples over the next 5-10 years.
Specific areas of interest include storage and access to research data; management of intellectual property including finalisation of the work undertaken by Dr Jane Anderson in 2006; new areas of research including biodiversity; privacy; and rights in recordings of performances and activities, particularly where these recordings can be distributed/shared eg through DVD or the internet. Other issues may be added during the project.
Mr Michael Davis has been appointed as project officer for this review, and will be conducting the workshop. Mr Davis has worked on various projects dealing with Indigenous knowledge, intellectual property and ethical issues since 2002.
