Abstract

In 'Beyond Guarding Ground: A Vision for a National Indigenous Cultural Authority' Terri Janke argues for stronger support to develop and defend Indigenous cultural and intellectual property rights. Concerned by the failure of the Australian intellectual property system to protect Indigenous cultural and intellectual property rights, particularly in areas such as the Indigenous communal ownership of cultural expressions and knowledge, Janke's vision is for a National Indigenous Cultural Authority which would provide a framework and the infrastructure to support and defend Indigenous cultural and intellectual property rights. In this panel session  you are invited to explore what could be gained by the establishment of a such an Authority, and some of the impediments to its development.
