Native Title Conference 2010: People, Place, Power

Welcome
This year, the conference themes reflect the fact the conference will occur in the national capital; a place where significant native title decisions have been made. The conference will address the following themes:
People
- the legacy of native title for future generations
- land justice and social and emotional wellbeing
- human rights and racial discrimination
- women and native title
Place
- governing native title land - roles and responsibilities of PBCs
- land, water, heritage, country
- environment, conservation and joint management
- housing, tenure and community development
Power
- the national policy framework and proposed National Partnership Agreement
- economic development and native title payments
- broader land settlements and native title agreements
- reforms to the Native Title Act.
This important national event provides us all with the opportunity to have new conversations, make new connections and strengthen old friendships. This year we encourage you to step back from the day-to-day processes of the Native Title Act and consider what drives claimants to seek resolution through a native title claim. At the conference we can take the time to positively and openly engage with these issues, so that all parties can build better native title processes.
We would like delegates to discuss how we can all respond to traditional owners’ rights and aspirations creatively, bringing constructive, pragmatic approaches to difficult conversations about Indigenous land settlements and agreements, not only in Australia but throughout the world. Through such approaches we can make significant headway in securing long term economic and social benefits for the whole community, and a better deal for the health of country.
