NTRB WORKSHOPS This day will consist of workshops conducted by NTRB/NTS staff for NTRB/NTS staff and/or executives and members. These workshops will cater for the various areas of interest and expertise within NTRBs. Key to the success of the workshops is the free and open dialogue and sharing of knowledge between NTRBs. LARRAKIA WELCOME TO COUNTRY The 2006 Native Title Conference is being held on the traditional lands of the Larrakia people. Conference delegates are invited to attend a Welcome to Country being hosted by the Larrakia Elders. The Welcome to Country will include a didgeridoo performance by Desmond 'Mondo' Mills, a song by Alison Mills, and dances and story telling by the Kenbi Dancers. NATIVE TITLE CONFERENCE The Native Title Conference is open to members of general public who have registered. Over the two days, keynote lectures and papers will be presented by native title holders and claimants, practitioners, NTRB staff, researchers, academics and others. Please download the program for the most up to date details. The program will be provided to delegates at the registration desk in Darwin. All plenary sessions will be held in The Esplanade Pavilion. Morning and afternoon tea, lunches and all break-out sessions will be held in the Holiday Inn Esplanade. THE MABO LECTURE The Mabo Lecture will be delivered by Galarrwuy Yunupingu, with opening remarks by Mrs Bonita Mabo. The inaugural Mabo Lecture was delivered by Noel Pearson at the 2001 Native Title Conference, and since the 2003 Native Title Conference the Mabo Lecture has become an annual event. The past presenters of the Mabo Lecture are Noel Pearson (2001 and 2003), John Borrows (2004), and Aden Ridgeway (2005). NATIVE TITLE EXHIBITION The Northern Land Council have prepared a Native Title Exhibition which will be shown during the conference. ABORIGINAL STUDIES BOOK LAUNCH Compromised Jurisprudence traces the development of the courts’ thinking from the original decision in Mabo v Queensland [No. 2], through to the significant High Court decisions in 2002 in Western Australia v Ward, and Yorta Yorta, and the subsequent implementation of those cases by the Federal Court in cases such as De Rose. Dr Lisa Strelein is the Manager and Research Fellow of the Native Title Research Unit, AIATSIS. CONFERENCE DINNER To conclude and celebrate the conference, the Conference Dinner will be held on Friday evening in the Ballroom of the Holiday Inn Esplanade. The cost of the dinner is included in your registration fee. Dress: neat casual / or after five.
