Mediation, Negotiation & Facilitation

Indigenous decision making and dispute management

Project Overview

This project seeks to raise external interest in aspects of traditional decision-making and other decision-making processes as part of a broader evaluation of agreement making. The project also seeks to create publications around issues of community engagement, models of engagement, risk management, free prior and informed consent and complaints relating to authorisation processes.

The project builds on research and issues raised from the Indigenous Facilitation and Mediation Project (IFaMP) undertaken in 2003-06 and the Authorisation Project from 2006-08.

The project has been assisted by the partnership with the Federal Court which as part of the Indigenous Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management Case Study Project aimed to provide a report to the National Alternative Dispute Resolution Advisory Council (NADRAC) to examine Indigenous Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Publications

Toni Bauman was an advisor to the Federal Court’s Indigenous Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management Case Study Project and Dr Lisa Strelein was a member of the Project’s Steering Committee. An extensive report on the project was published in early 2009.

Ms Bauman was a participant in the Australia 2020 Summit held on 19 and 20 April 2008 at Parliament House in Canberra. She submitted a report to the summit available below.
