Deadline looms for papers for 2012 National Native Title Conference

Interested parties have until next Monday (20th February 2012) to submit proposals for papers, discussion panels and talking circles at this years National Native Title Conference to be held in Townsville in June.

The annual National Native Title Conference is Australia’s largest Indigenous policy conference and provides a unique opportunity for a diverse range of native title stakeholders from across the country to come together to review current native title practice, policy and law.

The 2012 National Native Title Conference will be co-convened by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) and the North Queensland Land Council (NQLC) on the traditional lands of the traditional owners of the Townsville area and will be held at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre from 4-6 June.

This year’s Conference is expected to attract some 700 delegates and will proudly celebrate and honour the 20th anniversary of the Mabo v Queensland (No 2) decision under the Conference theme of “Echoes of Mabo: Honour and Determination.

Interested parties are invited to submit proposals for papers and discussions across the five formats of Conference presentations – which are keynotes and plenary speeches, dialogue forums, technical workshops, topical workshops and Indigenous talking circles.

The conference will address the sub themes of Recognition, Reform and Revolution; Leadership and Legacies; Families and Youth; and Culture and Country.

Relevant topics within these themes include decision making, case law, the experiences of Prescribed Bodies Corporate, compensation, water, hunting practices, cultural life, joint-management, anthropology and legal practice, mediation and dispute resolution, document and information management, making and implementing agreements, benefits, economic development, local government planning regimes, health, governance, weeds management, housing, climate change, heritage, lateral violence, history, language, funding, policy, legal reform, environmental issues, international comparisons, research and statistics, sovereignty, reflections on the last 20 years, social relationships, theoretical developments, and future trends.

Interested parties should submit their proposal with an abstract (up to 200 words) and biography (up to 150 words for each presenter) to nativetitleconference@aiatsis.gov.au by Monday 20 February 2012.

Proposals must include the Call for Papers Submission Form, which is attached or is available on our website or through contacting the Native Title Research Unit (NTRU).

The annual National Native Title Conference is the leading annual professional development event for staff of native title representative bodies/service providers and relevant government agencies, as well as independent native title practitioners and academics.

This year’s conference is timed to follow on from events organised by the Townsville community on Sunday 3 June in Townsville to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Mabo decision.

Registrations for the Conference will open in late February.
