Professor Mick Dodson AM, Chair of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) has extended his congratulations to NITV on the launch of its historic free to air channel.
National Indigenous Television (NITV) – begins broadcasting 24 hours a day from midday today - joining the SBS suite of channels on free to air TV.
Professor Dodson says that NITV now plays a pivotal national role in preserving Indigenous peoples’ cultures, challenging stereotypes, and influencing the social and political agenda.
“Indigenous media have always empowered Indigenous voices,” he said.
“News, current affairs, sport, drama and entertainment - all from an Indigenous perspective - not only informs, but inspires and promotes a conversation with the rest of Australia.”
“It is that conversation that teaches the world of our stories, our unique experiences and the true history of Australia's first peoples - the oldest continuous culture on Earth.”
“NITV - now free to air - has the potential to influence generations of Australians.”
“On behalf of the Council and staff of AIATSIS, I congratulate the Board, staff and team at NITV on this wonderful and historic achievement.”
“AIATSIS has been a strong supporter of NITV and we look forward to continuing this partnership into the future.”
“Together we can affirm and raise awareness among all Australians, and people of other nations, of the richness and diversity of Australian Indigenous cultures and histories,” he concluded.
