5 September 2012
AIATSIS - the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies - in Canberra proudly coordinated a ‘book fair’ on Wednesday 5 September to help raise funds for Indigenous Literacy.
The Institute sought donations of books from across the Canberra community and received well over 1500 books - which were resold for $1-3 dollars or for a gold coin donation.
The book fair attracted substantial donations of books from the Australian Public Service Commission, the National Museum of Australia and also several primary and secondary schools across Canberra.
In all, some $1500 was raised in just 3 hours.
AIATSIS donated the left over books from the book fair - including hundreds of children’s books - to Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health Service, Canberra's local Aboriginal Medical Service.
As in previous years, the Institute’s award winning publishing arm - Aboriginal Studies Press – proudly donated $1000 to Indigenous literacy projects from the sales of the Aboriginal Australia wall map.
Indigenous Literacy Day aims to help raise funds to raise literacy levels and improve the lives and opportunities of Indigenous Australians living in remote and isolated regions. The funds raised help to buy books and literacy resources for these communities.
AIATSIS is proud to support Indigenous Literacy Day 2012.
