Alawa resources
The Alawa people live in the Northern Territory on the upper reaches of the Cox and Arnold rivers, south of the Roper River and west of the Gulf of Carpentaria.
The first pastoral leases for Hodgson Downs, 1884, and Nutwood Downs, 1900, triggered armed conflict betwen settlers and the Alawa and Ngandji people. Despite this the Alawa provided a labour force for these and other pastoral properties within their traditional lands for the next sixty years. Today Alawa people own Hodgson Downs, and much of the community lives there.
The Alawa language is still used, but Kriol is the main language spoken.
The Alawa language was studied by linguist Margaret Sharpe from 1966 to 1968. She has also recorded and published stories in Alawa, and is presently preparing an Alawa/Kriol/English dictionary.
