Visiting the Family History Unit
The Unit assists and refers anyone of Indigenous heritage with their family history research. We also specifically assist Link-Up Caseworkers in family tracing and reunion for Indigenous people who are members of the Stolen Generations. We also There is no charge for this service.

Visiting the Family History Unit

The Family History Unit can arrange visits for groups wanting to undertake family history research.

The Family History Unit provides visiting groups with:

* Opportunity for participants to research their family history with the guidance and
assistance of Family History Unit Staff
* Brief information sessions on searching family history resources such as
Births, Deaths and Marriages indexes and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Biographical Index (ABI)
* Background information on AIATSIS, it's functions and services. This includes guest
speakers from a range of Program areas wtihin AIATSIS (such as the AIATSIS Library
and AIATSIS Audiovisual Archive)
PLEASE NOTE: If you would like your group to be allocated time to research their own family history, we ask that you:
* limit your group to no more than 12 participants (this may be negotiated in some
circumstances, contact the Senior Family History Officer for more information)
* allocate a minimum of 3 hours for your visit
These guidelines aim to assist us - and you - to make the most of your visit.
Unfortunately, there are some things that we cannot assist you with. Family History Unit Staff do not undertake the compilation of family trees, nor can they provide opinions on whether individuals will be deemed eligible for benefits such as Abstudy by virtue of Aboriginality.
