Visiting the AIATSIS Family History Unit
The Family History Unit accepts visits from individuals or groups wanting to undertake family history research.
The Family History Unit provides visiting groups with
- Information on the services of the Family History Unit
- Opportunity for participants to research their family history with the guidance and assistance of Family History Unit Staff
- Brief information sessions on searching family history resources such as Births, Deaths and Marriages indexes and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Biographical Index (ABI)
- Background information on AIATSIS, it's functions and services. This includes guest speakers from a range of Program areas wtihin AIATSIS (such as the AIATSIS Library and AIATSIS Audiovisual Archive)
PLEASE NOTE: If you would like your group to be allocated time to research their own family history, we ask that you:
- limit your group to no more than 12 participants (this may be negotiated in some circumstances)
- allocate a minimum of 3 hours for your visit
These guidelines aim to assist us - and you - to make the most of your visit.
What we don’t do
Unfortunately, there are some things that we cannot assist you with. Family History Unit Staff do not undertake the compilation of family trees, nor can they provide opinions on whether individuals will be deemed eligible for benefits such as Abstudy by virtue of Aboriginality.
