Historical and Family History societies

Family history or local history societies are a valuable source of information for finding out about local and family history. These societies can put you in contact with people with a good knowledge of the local history of a town or area that you are interested in.

Many societies have produced indexes to cemetery records, local newspapers, possibly local council records etc. and could refer you to a local public library nearby that may have a local history collection of books, newspapers etc.You can also search google for your nearest historical society.

Below are links to web sites that contain large lists of family history societies in Australia. Please note that not all societies have a web site and some lists of societies are more complete than others. 

• Australian Libraries Gateway

  Family History (or Historical) societies often have libraries of their own or are attached to local libraries and one of the best ways to find one is to search for it in the Australian Libraries Gateway. Select 'Find a Library',  choose Library type 'Local/Family History' and type in the place you are interested in as the name. You can also browse using the map.

• Genealogy, Family History and Historical Societies (CoraWeb) This is a list of Historical socieites arranged by State
• The Cape Banks Family History society has a good list of Family History & Historical societies on it's website
• The Directory of Archives in Australia is also a good resource for finding Historical and Family History societies - just search for the the name of the town or area you are interested in
• Local Family History Societies This is a list of family historical socieites from NSW,QLD and WA
