The exhibition is part of a larger collaborative project between astronomers of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) and Yamaji Art in Geraldton, which explores Aboriginal art and astronomy as part of the 2009 International Year of Astronomy. The project brings together Indigenous artists and scientists to exchange and celebrate different perspectives about the night sky and to explore those perspectives in art.

The project has been nominated for a Western Australian Science Award – Science Outreach Program of the Year, and was recently featured on ABC’s Message Stick external.

Ilgarijiri - things belonging to the sky is a joint project between the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research and Yamaji Art, Geraldton. As part of International Year of Astronomy festivities, Ilgarijiri showcases and celebrates the unique culture of Aboriginal artists of the Midwest including the traditional custodians of the land on which Australian scientists hope the next generation radio telescope - the Square Kilometre Array - will be built.

The launch of the exhibition on the 27th of November coincided with a one day symposium at AIATSIS on Indigenous Astronomy.

More information about the symposium.
