
AIATSIS has more than 500 members throughout Australia and overseas involved in all aspects of Indigenous Studies, including research and teaching.
The Council appoints members of the Institute for a period of five years (renewable). Members can stand for and vote in the elections for Council members and for the Research Advisory Committee (RAC).

Membership of AIATSIS is a prestigious appointment. Through its electoral capacity, the membership plays a key role in establishing the composition of the AIATSIS Council and Research Advisory Committee (RAC).
Through its electoral capacity, AIATSIS Members have an input into the work of Council in determining the policy and direction of AIATSIS, and contribute to the RAC’s role in advising on research conducted at, and supported by, the Institute.
