Moving Image Collection

The film and video collection includes such items as published film and video titles, including prints of historical ethnographic films and other documentaries.

We hold many amateur films documenting all aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies. Some of these films include recordings of ceremonies, music, oral histories and cultural narratives.

Commercial Aboriginal media organisations and feature film production houses also lodge material in our archives for preservation.

Research seminars and other important events and corporate activities recorded by AIATSIS are held along with a number of original films made by the (former) AIAS Film Unit.

We also hold a selection of recorded copies of archival material from television sources.
