Yir-Yoront, an Aboriginal Australian language of Cape York Peninsula, marks tense in some verbs by vocalic ablaut: kayl 'ties', kuy 'tied'. Use of this process is almost unique in a language area where suffixing is the norm for marking tense. The development of ablaut from the historically antecedent process, suffixing, begins with a series of mechanical sound changes including umlaut (vowel harmony). There followed a series of purposive manipulations of sound-processes and a reanalysis of underlying forms, producing simplifications in the phonological rules, a new abstract similarity in the morphological structure of nouns and verbs, and complexities of new types into the inflectional process.
