303 Sort and Tab Expander
Sort is used to arrange the lines of a text file into alphabetic
or numeric order. The criteria for the sort may start in any column of
the file. Because a tab character is often used to separate different fields,
Tab Expander can be used to replace those tab characters with spaces so
that the the fields separated by tabs actually start in a given column
of the file. It can also be used to ensure that the file is in proper Macintosh
form or to convert the file to IBM PCDOS or UNIX file forms. [Software:

TEXT Ranger looks at all the text files on a disk and allows you
to change the creator and delete the resource fork of all the files quickly.
TEXT Ranger is also the first program to use what I call the "Standard
Volume Package". This is a small front-end for Standard File which makes
it suitable for choosing disks rather than files. (It consists of a little
bit of machine code, and a small resource file.) [Software: 2 files, 23

unstructured text files, and then browse through those indices, clicking

Facilitates the intensive study of a flat text or an interlinear
text by producing a list of all the words occurring in it, with a short
section of the context preceding and following each occurrence of a word.
In many fields of study such a list is called a concordance. It is also
similar to a key word in context (kwic) index, except that the index does
not have to be restricted to particular words. [Software: 18 files, 603

388 Database TASUSE (use of Tasmanian plants by Aborigines)
Gott, Beth
THE TASUSE DATABASE. List of all plant species occurring in Tasmania,
with records of Aboriginal use from areas other than Tasmania as well as
the records from Tasmania itself. Mueller, in Smyth (1878), compiled a
list of over 100 species which could have been used for food in Tasmania,
drawing on his extensive knowledge of species used by Victorian Aborigines.
Jones,1971, when faced with the necessity of estimating the resources in
the Rocky Cape area, followed a similar method. He collected information
about plant foods from south-eastern Australia and made some of his own
field observations, and then, using a botanical check-list from the Rocky
Cape area, he was able to list 82 possible food plants, of which 37 were
orchids. This TASUSE database has listed all genera/species of known Aboriginal
use which occur in Tasmania, whether the record comes from Tasmania itself
or from the mainland of Australia. Most records are from south-eastern
Australia, for the obvious reason that the vegetation of this area bears
the closest relationship to the flora of Tasmania. Only 7 genera endemic
to Tasmania are included in the database, but where genera are in common
between Tasmania and other parts of Australia, many Tasmanian endemic species
are listed. An example of this is Eucalyptus gunnii, an endemic Eucalypt,
the sap of which was collected for food. [List of Resources: 3 files, 546
