- 225 The psychological reality of paradigms: the origin of ablaut as a morphological process in Yir-Yoront Alpher, Barry
Yir Yoront Yir-Yoront, an Aboriginal Australian language of Cape York Peninsula, marks tense in some verbs by vocalic ablaut: kayl 'ties', kuy 'tied'. Use of this process is almost unique in a language area where suffixing is the norm for marking tense. The development of ablaut from the historically antecedent process, suffixing, begins with a series of mechanical sound changes including umlaut (vowel harmony). There followed a series of purposive manipulations of sound-processes and a reanalysis of underlying forms, producing simplifications in the phonological rules, a new abstract similarity in the morphological structure of nouns and verbs, and complexities of new types into the inflectional process. - 226 Some proto-Pama-Nyungan paradigms: a verb in the hand is worth two in the phylum Alpher, Barry
This paper provides comparative evidence for certain inflected verb forms in Proto-Pama-Nyungan. The methodology used is the comparison of entire verb stems in construction with inflectional endings in modern Pama-Nyungan languages. These endings mark tense, aspect, and mood, or a combination of these. [Paper: 1 file, 56 kB] Open

Pintupi This is a printout of a database that was started in 1988. The long term aim of this project is to record local knowledge for use as resource material in the bicultural program. Various linguists and researchers have collected Pintupi language/cultural material in the past which is available in the form of dictionaries, grammars, and a range of anthropological and ethnobotanical papers and bibliographies. As far as providing reference/resource material for classrooms goes, material organised semantically into curriculum domains or fields is far more useful than unstructured dictionaries. For example the new Pintupi/Luritja Dictionary (3rd Ed) is extremely large and it is not easy to find information readily on a particular topic. What I have started to do is to 'mine' information from these references and organise them into domains like animals, plants, material culture etc. A lot of work was carried out in 88/89 on the animal domain which led to the publication of Kuka: Pintupi Animal Foods (disk version included here). However there are still many domains to be covered and it is best if this process is ongoing, that is, as new words, definitions etc come to hand they can be added to the database. - N.
