This register of massacres and killings of Aboriginal people discovered during Ian Clark’s doctoral research into western Victoria covers the period 1803 to 1859. In a deliberate challenge to the ideology that the colonisation of western Victoria was peaceful, the register reveals the violence was widespread. Conventional documentary sources are capable of yielding a considerable quarry of material in which voices of not only the colonisers, but the colonised can be heard. The barriers that have for so long kept Aboriginal experiences out of history books were not based on a lack of material, but rather on perception and choice.
